After translating Phèdre into Phèdre ! and inviting audiences to join the circle of classical tragedy enthusiasts, François Gremaud set about rewriting the most famous of Romantic ballets: Giselle. He turned to dancer Samantha van Wissen, whom he had met in Thomas Hauert’s studio, for his Giselle..., confident that she’d be able to create “that weightless state into which performers can plunge me, these transmitters of astonishment, and the ineffable emotion that seizes me when I watch them”. And the challenge was met. An amused expert, van Wissen delivers a skilful one-woman show, giving voice and breathing life into the choreographic and historical descriptions and the sociological considerations that surround the ballet. Thus we learn that “ballet emerged as a dramatic genre in its own right in the 18th century and discover the importance of male variations on gender categorisation in 1830, as well as the influence of La Sylphide on the colour of wedding dresses”. From stories to essays, we follow the dancer’s steps towards the work and the character of a joyfully updated and refreshingly poetic Giselle.
On 09.09, a "trilogy" ticket includes the 3 shows (Phèdre !, 13:00 + Giselle..., 16:00 + Carmen., 19:00).
