The Festival opens with a shot of adrenalin. In the starting blocks of this dance and sporting track, you’ll find a violinist, a double bassist, a keyboardist, a drummer, a cheerleader, a singer, a coach and a song, One Song: “Knock, knock/Who’s there? It’s your grief from the past”. The grief knocking at the door is the death of her brother, for which Miet Warlop sought consolation in her first play, Sportband/Afgetrainde Klanken, written in 2005. Invited to create a piece that would span the whole of her work and become part of the Histoire(s) du Théâtre series, following in the footsteps of Milo Rau, Faustin Linyekula and Angélica Liddell, Warlop reinterprets the form of this requiem. Surprising for this Flemish choreographer, who has been wielding absurdist and burlesque humour in unclassifiable shows for the last fifteen years. Or maybe not. One Song is a requiem for a gym that dissolves all sorrow in a ritual concert where dance leads to trance.
