VanThorhout
Circus
Vantournhout’s VanThorhout is a play on words, as was Aneckxander, the first self-portrait that Alexander Vantournhout created in 2015, which focused on the body. Here, the Belgian dancer depicts fragility with majesty. From his circus years, he has kept his love of objects, tools and crafts, and the certainty of how interdependent humans and objects are. Sometimes the latter take over, sometimes they give in. To illustrate the fluctuations of this relationship, the dancer borrows Thor’s tool – his hammer, Mjölnir, an emblem of virile strength and victory. In the centre of a circular stage, the performer spins round and round, his arms elongated by two hammers. Slowly, a contortion of the arms and shoulders intensify the undulations of this “augmented” dancer. The complexity of these movements, learned at P.A.R.T.S. in Brussels, enhances his alternately fluid and abrupt twirls, playing on the relationship of force, control and power between human body and instrument. VanThorhout absorbs the audience in the fragile tension of unbreakable moments that turn 50 minutes of imminent danger into an unforgettable experience.
