Exótica
Dance
With Exótica, Vienna-based Chilean choreographer Amanda Piña revives the works of La Sarabia (1878-1988), Nyota Inyoka (1896-1971), François (Féral) Benga (1906-1957) and Leila Bederkhan (1903-1986), who toured Europe at the beginning of the last century. Showcased at a time when exoticism was taking over from orientalism, how are these works perceived today? What remains of this context today? Has it faded from view? In an exhilarating ritual of ancestral summoning, invocations and exorcisms, Exótica celebrates the opening of a space in which “the endangered practices of human movement” are made visible, and where the way we look at them is decolonised. It’s magic at work!
