For the first time, South African company Empatheatre will be performing in Geneva. Based on a methodology specific to the South African context of inequality, its creations are the result of stories and collaborations with people who have been historically, socially and politically excluded. Isidlamlilo (The Fire Eater), created by the formidable actress Mpume Mthombeni and director Neil Coppen, tells the true story of Zenzile Maseko through several voices. This 60-year-old Zulu grandmother, haunted by her past and mistakenly declared dead by Internal Affairs, is plunged into a Kafkaesque nightmare: in order to prove that she’s still alive, she must awaken unmentionable parts of her identity, which she has spent most of her life trying to suppress. It’s tense, funny and fantastic. It’s the true story of a challenge to oblivion.
