Written just over fifty years ago, L’Homosexuel ou la Difficulté de s’exprimer is not strictly speaking a play about the “homosexual condition”, or perhaps even about homosexuality. Rather, it focuses on what remains inexpressible in every body, every identity, and stages the difficulty, indeed the inability of language to express exactly what we are. Thibaud Croisy has brought together five performers, among them a trio of flamboyant ones, with different backgrounds and career paths, to honour Copi’s multi-faceted playwriting: Frédéric Leidgens as Madre, a castrating mother who would make Lorca’s Andalusians pale; Emmanuelle Lafon as Garbo, a piano teacher with unconventional methods; and Helena de Laurens as Irina, the unique, perverse being who tries to escape all categories and perhaps language itself. But at the end of a night when the demons of the body awaken, who’ll win this dreadful game?

In 2021, Christian Bourgois éditions began a series of new editions of Copi's plays. Le Bal des folles (novel), L'Homosexuel ou la difficulté de s'exprimer, Les Quatre Jumelles (theatre) and La Guerre des pédés (novel) have all been republished, with postfaces by Thibaud Croisy.
